We finished up our
Ocean Animals theme this week! Monday morning for our morning work the students
practiced cutting with scissors. I gave them each two strips of paper to cut.
One student cut a piece off and said “Look I made a trapazoid!”. Such a smart
boy!
During our lesson we
read the book Octavia and Her Purple Ink Cloud by Donna and Dorreen
Rathmell. This book is about a little octopus who watches her friends practice
hiding from enemies. She tries to practice too but can’t seem to make her ink
cloud the right color. After reading the book we discussed animal adaptions and
why they are important. In the back of the book it had some riddles and the
kids had to guess what animal when with what adaption. During centers the
students got to make their own octopus! They painted a cup purple, added some eyes,
and gave them eight streamer legs. We hung them from the ceiling to make it
feel like we were in the ocean!
Tuesday we learned
about sea turtles! We read the book Sea Turtles by Carol K. Lindeen. We
learned some new vocabulary words: shell and reptile. During centers the
students made a sea turtle out of a paper plate. They painted it green and then
added some spots to the top.
Tuesday night we had our
preschool program, which went great! The kids did an excellent job singing and
dancing! Here are two of the pretty girls waiting backstage!
During our lesson we
read the book Crabs by Carol K. Lindeen. We learned the vocabulary word
“pincer” after reading the book. During centers the students made a crab using
their hands! I painted both hands and had them stamp them onto a blue sheet of
paper. They turned out really cute!
Thursday we read the
book Sea Stars by Carol K. Lindeen. We learned the vocabulary word
“ray”. During centers we made a sea star using glitter and cheerios!
For our lesson we read
the book Pout Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen. I love this book and so do
the kids! It is about a little fish whose mouth is shaped like a frown so he
always pouts. That is until one day a girl fish comes along and gives him a
kiss on his pout. He then decides that he is a kiss kiss fish! This week we
have been working on the letter X so during centers the students did an X
dauber page. They then got to decorate a pout pout/kiss kiss fish.
It was a fun two weeks
learning about ocean animals!
